How to Install Texture Packs on PPSSPP for Better Graphics
Upgrade your PSP game graphics with HD texture packs on PPSSPP. Step-by-step guide to download, install, and configure texture replacements.
What Are Texture Packs?
Texture packs replace the original low-resolution PSP game textures with high-definition versions. Since PPSSPP can render at higher resolutions than the original PSP, HD textures make games look dramatically better — especially when combined with upscaling settings.
Think of it as giving your favorite PSP games a visual remaster, for free.
How Texture Replacement Works in PPSSPP
PPSSPP has a built-in texture replacement system. When enabled, it intercepts texture loading and swaps original textures with custom high-res versions from a folder on your device.

Step 1: Enable Texture Replacement
On Android & PC
- Open PPSSPP → Settings → Tools → Developer Tools

Step 3: Install the Texture Pack

PSP/TEXTURES/in your PPSSPP directory - The folder structure should be:
PSP/TEXTURES/GAMEID/with PNG files inside - Launch the game — textures load automatically
On PC
- Extract the texture pack
- Place the game ID folder in:
memstick/PSP/TEXTURES/ - Same structure:
TEXTURES/GAMEID/*.png - Start the game in PPSSPP
Step 4: Configure for Best Results
To get the most out of texture packs, adjust these settings:
- Rendering Resolution: Set to 3x or higher (Settings → Graphics)
- Texture Filtering: Set to Linear or Auto
- Anisotropic Filtering: 4x or 8x for sharper textures at angles

How to Dump Textures (For Creators)
Want to create your own texture pack? PPSSPP can dump all textures from a game:
- Go to Settings → Tools → Developer Tools
- Enable "Save New Textures"
- Play through the game — all textures get saved to
PSP/TEXTURES/GAMEID/ - Edit the PNG files with Photoshop, GIMP, or AI upscaling tools
- Disable "Save New Textures" when done
Performance Impact
Texture packs can affect performance:
- First load: Slower as PPSSPP loads HD textures into cache
- After caching: Minimal performance hit on modern devices
- RAM usage: Higher — HD textures use more memory
- Storage: Packs can be 100MB-2GB depending on the game
