Despicable Me: The Game PSP review — explore Gru's villain adventure with Minions, gadgets & action platforming. Download the ISO free on QrivitiGames.
Despicable Me: The Game — A Villainous Platformer Worth Your Time
When you think of movie tie-in games, expectations are usually kept safely on the floor. But Despicable Me: The Game on PSP genuinely surprised me. Based on the wildly popular animated film, this action-platformer puts you in control of the world's most lovable supervillain, Gru, and delivers a surprisingly solid portable experience that's far more enjoyable than it has any right to be.
With over 7,600 downloads on QrivitiGames alone, it's clear that PSP fans keep coming back to this quirky little gem. If you haven't tried it yet, here's why you should give Gru and his army of Minions a chance. You can grab it right now from our Despicable Me: The Game download page.
What Makes It Special?
Most licensed games slap a movie's skin onto a generic template and call it a day. Despicable Me: The Game goes a step further by leaning into what makes the franchise fun — the gadgets, the Minions, and the sheer absurdity of being a villain who's trying to steal the moon. The game follows the plot of the first film loosely, giving you original levels and scenarios that expand on the movie's world rather than just retelling it scene by scene.
The art style translates beautifully to the PSP's screen. Character models are chunky and expressive, environments are colorful and varied, and the Minions are as hilariously animated as you'd expect. It runs smoothly on real hardware and plays perfectly through PPSSPP on Android too.
Gameplay Highlights
At its core, Despicable Me is a side-scrolling action platformer with some light puzzle elements thrown in. You play primarily as Gru, navigating through levels set across various locations — from his underground lair to Vector's fortress. The controls are tight and responsive, which is honestly the most important thing a platformer can get right.
Gadgets and Weapons
Gru's arsenal is the star of the show. You'll unlock and upgrade a variety of villainous gadgets throughout the game:
- Freeze Ray — The iconic weapon from the film. Freeze enemies solid, then shatter them or use them as platforms.
- Shrink Ray — Miniaturize obstacles and enemies. Some puzzles require creative shrinking to progress.
- Fart Gun — Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like, and yes, it's just as funny as in the movie.
- Minion Launcher — Deploy your little yellow helpers to hit switches, distract guards, or just cause general chaos.
Minion Management
Throughout levels, you'll collect and deploy Minions for various tasks. Some sections require you to command a squad of them to solve environmental puzzles — stack them to reach high platforms, send them through small passages, or use them as distractions. It adds a layer of strategy that keeps the gameplay from becoming a mindless run-and-jump affair.
Boss Fights
The boss encounters are surprisingly well-designed. Each one requires you to identify patterns and use the right gadget at the right time. The Vector boss fights in particular are genuinely challenging and satisfying to beat, capturing the rivalry from the film perfectly.
The Levels and Pacing
The game is split into around 20 levels across multiple worlds, each taking roughly 10-15 minutes to complete. That's a sweet spot for portable gaming — long enough to feel substantial, short enough to enjoy during a commute or break. Hidden collectibles in each level (Minion tokens, gadget blueprints, movie stills) encourage replaying and exploring every corner.
Level variety is decent. You'll go from stealth-ish infiltration missions to full-on action sequences, with the occasional vehicle section thrown in for good measure. The difficulty ramps up at a comfortable pace, making the later levels feel rewarding without being frustrating.
Visuals and Sound
For a PSP title, the presentation is impressive. The cel-shaded art direction keeps everything looking clean, and the character animations have real personality — Gru's exaggerated walk, the Minions' gibberish chatter, Vector's dramatic villain poses. The soundtrack captures the film's playful energy with upbeat orchestral tracks that fit the action perfectly.

Who Should Play This?
Despicable Me: The Game is perfect for:
- Fans of the franchise — It's faithful to the film's humor and style without being a lazy cash-in.
- Platformer lovers — Tight controls, creative level design, and satisfying gadget mechanics.
- Casual gamers — Accessible difficulty with optional challenges for completionists.
- Parents and younger players — Family-friendly content with genuine fun factor for all ages.
- Anyone looking for a feel-good game — It's hard not to smile when a horde of Minions follows you around causing chaos.
Final Verdict
Despicable Me: The Game isn't going to win any awards for innovation, but that's not the point. It's a polished, fun, and genuinely charming action platformer that makes excellent use of the Despicable Me license. The gadget variety keeps combat interesting, the Minion mechanics add a unique twist, and the presentation is top-notch for a PSP title.
If you're looking for something lighthearted and entertaining to add to your PSP library, Gru's adventure is well worth the download. Head over to our Despicable Me: The Game page to grab the ISO and start your villainous journey today.
Rating: 7.5/10 — A surprisingly fun movie tie-in that proves even villains deserve a good game.
