Gods Eater Burst Review: Post-Apocalyptic Monster Hunting at Its Finest
Gods Eater Burst delivers fast-paced action RPG combat in a dystopian sci-fi world. Explore the innovative devour system, weapon customization, and co-op gameplay.
Gods Eater Burst: The Monster Hunter Alternative That Found Its Own Voice
Released in 2010 for the PSP, Gods Eater Burst arrived during the height of the "hunting action" genre's popularity, but instead of simply imitating Monster Hunter's medieval fantasy setting, it carved out a distinctive identity with its post-apocalyptic sci-fi world and dynamic combat system. Over 18,000 downloads later, this title remains one of the most compelling action RPGs on the platform.
A World on the Brink
Gods Eater Burst drops you into a dystopian future where humanity has been pushed to the edge of extinction by mysterious creatures called Aragami. These biomechanical monstrosities have ravaged civilization, leaving survivors huddled in fortified colonies. You play as a God Eater — an elite warrior wielding specialized living weapons called God Arcs that can consume the Aragami's own power.
The narrative is surprisingly well-developed for a handheld action game. Voice acting (in the English version) brings the diverse cast to life, from your commanding officer Lindow to the enigmatic scientist Johannes. The story tackles themes of sacrifice, humanity's hubris, and what it means to fight for survival when the odds are insurmountable. Cutscenes are presented in a stylish anime aesthetic that complements the game's visual design perfectly.
Combat That Flows Like Butter
Where Gods Eater Burst truly shines is its combat system. Unlike Monster Hunter's methodical, weighty approach, this game emphasizes speed and aggression. Your God Arc can transform between three forms instantly:
- Blade Form: Close-range melee combos that build up your Burst gauge
- Gun Form: Ranged attacks using various ammunition types
- Predator Form: The signature "devour" mechanic that lets you bite chunks off enemies to trigger Burst Mode
The devour system is what sets Gods Eater apart. Successfully biting an Aragami enters you into Burst Mode, dramatically increasing your attack power and speed while granting access to special Burst Arts moves. This risk-reward mechanic creates an addictive flow — get close, unleash combos, devour at the right moment, then unleash devastation. It's exhilarating and makes every hunt feel dynamic.
The weapon customization is extensive. You can craft and upgrade dozens of blade types (short swords, long blades, buster swords, spears, scythes) and gun configurations (assault, sniper, shotgun, blast), each with distinct movesets and strategies. Add in the shield component and elemental modifications, and you have hundreds of possible God Arc combinations to experiment with.
Mission Structure and Progression
The game follows a mission-based structure, with hunts ranging from quick 5-minute subjugations to epic 30-minute boss battles. Missions are accessed from your home base, Fenrir Far East Branch, where you can also manage equipment, accept side missions, and interact with NPCs.
What makes Gods Eater Burst the "Burst" version specifically is the substantial expansion over the original Gods Eater. It adds:
- 100+ new missions beyond the original story
- New difficulty levels that extend the endgame significantly
- Additional Aragami species with unique attack patterns
- Improved balance and quality-of-life features
- Burst Mode itself (not present in the base game)
The difficulty curve is well-tuned. Early missions teach you the ropes against smaller Aragami, but soon you're facing towering behemoths like the Vajra (a lightning-fast quadruped) or the Chi-You (a multi-headed dragon that requires precise teamwork). The hardest missions will test even veteran action game players.
Multiplayer: The Heart of the Experience
While the single-player campaign is solid, Gods Eater Burst was designed with co-op in mind. Ad-hoc multiplayer supports up to 4 players tackling missions together, and the game truly comes alive in this mode. Coordinating devours to keep the whole team in Burst Mode, assigning roles (tank, damage dealer, support), and overcoming the toughest Difficulty 10+ missions with friends creates unforgettable moments.
Even playing solo, you'll have AI companions on most missions. The AI is surprisingly competent — they'll heal you, focus fire on your target, and generally pull their weight. You can issue basic commands to control their behavior, making solo play viable even if not quite as thrilling as true co-op.
Visual and Audio Design
The art direction is a standout. The post-apocalyptic world is rendered in a distinctive anime-inspired style with thick outlines and vibrant colors that pop on the PSP screen. Character designs by Kota Nozomi are memorable and diverse, while the Aragami designs range from grotesque bio-mechanical horrors to oddly majestic creatures.
The soundtrack, composed by Go Shiina, is phenomenal. Battle themes pulse with electronic energy and orchestral bombast, perfectly matching the intensity of combat. The main theme and character themes have emotional weight that elevates key story moments. This is easily one of the best OSTs on the PSP.
Performance and Technical Aspects
On original PSP hardware, the game runs smoothly most of the time, though intense battles with multiple large Aragami can cause occasional frame drops. Load times are reasonable for a PSP game of this scope — around 15-20 seconds between missions. The Gods Eater Burst ISO/CSO files work excellently on PPSSPP emulator with near-perfect compatibility, and you can even push the resolution and framerate beyond the original hardware limits.
Who Should Play Gods Eater Burst?
This game is perfect for:
- Monster Hunter fans looking for a faster-paced alternative with more anime flair
- Action RPG enthusiasts who love deep customization and skill-based combat
- Sci-fi fans interested in post-apocalyptic settings with unique worldbuilding
- Co-op gamers who want a challenging multiplayer experience on PSP
- Anyone who loved games like Phantasy Star Portable 2 or Lord of Arcana
If you prefer slow, methodical combat or realistic aesthetics, you might find the fast-paced anime action a bit overwhelming. But if you're willing to embrace the game's unique identity, Gods Eater Burst offers one of the deepest and most rewarding action experiences on the PSP.
Final Verdict
Gods Eater Burst is a triumph of focused game design. It takes the hunting action formula, streamlines what works, adds innovative mechanics like the devour system, and wraps it all in a cohesive sci-fi package with genuine narrative ambition. The expanded content over the original release makes this the definitive way to experience the game.
With over 100 hours of content for completionists, satisfying progression systems, and combat that never gets old, this is essential playing for PSP action fans. The game was successful enough to spawn an entire franchise (God Eater 2, God Eater 3, anime adaptations), and it all started here with this PSP gem.
Whether you're revisiting the post-apocalyptic world of God Eaters or discovering it for the first time on PPSSPP, Gods Eater Burst deserves a spot in any PSP library. Download it, grab some friends, and experience one of the most underrated action RPGs of the handheld generation.
